Counseling and Personal Training

Megan Spalding
I am the owner of Milestones Counseling and Personal Training and have been practicing since 2007. My work is based on my strong belief that finding meaningful connections, in addition to having empathy and compassion for ourselves can help us weather and move through anything from depression, anxiety, trauma, everyday stressors, and everything in between. This belief has brought me to my continued work and training in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). EFT is an empirically based approach that focuses on strengthening connection/attachment by changing negative communication patterns, decreasing emotional reactivity, and identifying and understanding blocks in our ability to connect and be vulnerable in relationships. EFT is shown to be highly successful in helping couples become healthier and happier in their relationship long term. This approach has also been adapted and found to be successful in work with individuals. Individuals will be able to create healthy interpersonal patterns in order to move through conflict and problems that may arise in any relationship, personal and professional. In addition to EFT, I also use Internal Family Systems, which allows individuals to understand and have compassion for the ways they have learned to approach and cope in their world, thus opening the door to growth, healing from trauma, overcoming depression/anxiety, and meeting the goals they have set for themselves.
I believe we all have struggles in our lives, but it is the way in which we cope and work through those struggles where we find our strength and power. A part of counseling is becoming aware of and finding those inner strengths and using them to work through the challenges we face.

The Counselor

I have struggled with my weight since I was a kid. I had spent so much time and energy as a counselor improving and growing internally, but struggled in overcoming the hurdles in improving my physical health. However, in 2012 that all change. Once I accepted and confronted my fear of failure, I began a journey that changed my world. In the next 8 months I lost 75lbs and have kept the weight off ever since. In those years, I had to face and move through insecurities and fears, but working out and maintaining a healthy lifestyle helped me move through those struggles. This experience has allowed me to fully embrace the impact an active lifestyle can have on one's emotional wellbeing. I currently maintain my personal training certificate with specialized certificates in weight loss and group training. I don't actively train clients currently, but the knowledge I have gained in obtaining my certifications greatly informs the work I do with clients
